I’m just starting my cake business. What do I do first?
Check out my initial top tips here. Write a business plan. Create an LLC or other business structure. Get business insurance. Get a food license. Make an appointment with your local SBA office. Read everything you can about starting a business. Then jump in and don’t look back. Fake it ‘til you make it. Take breaks to avoid burnout. And that’s the short list!
Where are all the recipes? Isn’t this a blog about cake? Yes, it is! There are already a bunch of great blogs out there who share amazing cake recipes and plenty of wonderful cookbooks to go ‘round. This blog’s focus is primarily the cake business and cake design/technique. Check out the list of some of my other favorite blogs or favorite books for more information about cake baking and recipes.
I’m just starting out in cake decorating. Where should I start? Take a class! There are many beginning cake decorating classes held at our large chain craft stores, which are a good starting point. Learn the basics and you can always expand from there! You may even be able to find a great local baker who would be willing to help you for a fee. You can also try continuing education classes at your local community college or your neighborhood community center, or even in the comfort of your own home with videos from Craftsy!
I have a question about a cake design or technique you showed. Please post your comment through the comments section of the blog for that specific post. I can almost guarantee that if you have a question, someone else is wondering the same exact thing and will appreciate your post! Most of the time I am able to respond to comments much faster than emails, so that is the best way to get a quick answer.
I have a question for you specifically related to my business and I’d like your advice. While I certainly can’t tell you what to do, you are welcome to email me with your question. I am happy to share my experiences with you, but only you can decide what’s best for your business!
Can I use one of your photos on my site?
All of my photos and content are copyrighted, so please do not use them without my permission. If you are interested in a particular photo, please email me to ask permission. I will require that you provide a link back to my site and proper credit.
Can I use one of your photos to show my client an example of an idea we’ve talked about? Of course…but please do not modify or crop the image. For example, it still needs to say talksweettome.com on it.
Can we exchange links?
Sorry, no. I just don’t do that. You can find a list of my favorite blogs and websites on the Blogs I Love page. If you have a site that I don’t know about yet and you’d like to draw my attention to it, please email me…I’d love to see.
Why didn’t my comment get posted on your blog?
I truly appreciate everyone who takes the time to comment on this blog. All comments, thoughts, reactions, constructive criticism, and alternative opinions are welcome. However, rude/nasty messages that are not constructive and spam are automatically deleted. Talk Sweet to Me is meant to be a happy place…let’s keep it that way!
Do you accept products for review?
Nope, sorry. All of the books I review are part of my personal collection that I bought with my very own money, and I only recommend products and vendors that I’ve personally used and that have worked well for me. If that policy changes, readers, you will be the first to know.
I would like to advertise on your site. Great! Please send me an email. I will be compiling a list of potential advertisers for when Talk Sweet to Me is ready to expand later this year. You will be on the list to be in the know!
Who does your cake photography?
It’s just me, myself, and I. Many of the photos were taken quite a while ago before I had any knowledge of lighting…or a decent camera. A lot of those photos still serve as examples of something I’m writing about, so I use them. A few photos you’ll see on here are by professional photographers. I will always do my best to give those photographers credit. If you don’t see a credit, it’s usually by me.
Who took your wedding and profile photos? Wedding photos were by Marco Simonelli at PhotoMementos. Profile photos were by Denny Medley at Random Photography. Both are based in Kansas City and are fantastic to work with!
Why did you start this blog?
Well, I’m still not sure I have anything clever, important, or even really all that interesting to say about cake that hasn’t already been said. But I learned a lot while running my business and thought a blog would be a good place to share so everyone else can skip over the mistakes I made!
Do you still take orders for wedding or birthday cakes? No, I do not. Sorry.
What is your favorite kind of cake? Chocolate (heart)! Always and forever.
